You Know What to Do

There are certain things that everyone knows they should do, but few actually do. We know we should stay away from junk food. We know we should get regular exercise. We know we should back up our data files on a daily basis, or at least weekly. Still we grab a bag of barbecued potato chips that we eat in the car as we drive past the gym on our way home from work where we left without backing up our hard drive for the 145th consecutive day.
If we persist in these bad habits, we know there will be consequences. One day we’ll find our waistlines have expanded, and one day our hard drive will fail and take all of our important work files with it. Both of these eventualities are much easier to prevent than they are to correct after the fact. Both of them can, however, be corrected. If we start hitting the gym every day instead of driving past it, and if we start paying more attention to what we eat, then we can get our old waistline back again. If we send our hard drive out to a company that specializes in data recovery services, we can get our old files back.
The data on our hard drives, whether at work or at home, probably has either information or other files that simply can’t be replaced. Important customer files, billing records, and, in these days of digital cameras, priceless family photos. The value of these files make it worthwhile to send our failed drives out for hard drive data recovery service. The company that’s extracting the data from the failed drive will usually write the data that they recover to the media of your choice, either CD-ROMs, DVD-Rs, or a new hard drive. When you get the files back, the first thing you should do is make a back-up copy.
The key to backing up your data files is the same as the key to getting your waistline back where you want it and keeping it there. That key is discipline. Establishing a regular back up schedule and sticking with it can prevent the future need for data recovery services by ensuring that you always have up to date backup files.
Most commercially available virus prevention software and operating systems will allow you to set an automatic back up schedule that takes all the effort out of backing up your files. All you need to do is make sure the computer is loaded with a writable disk or it’s connected to an external or networked drive with enough available storage space to duplicate your hard drives contents. If only diet and exercise could be that easy.
