Hallowed Be Halloween

Halloween party

As an experienced tradition, Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in the world. It’s greeted with fervor and delight by both children and adults. For children it means a chance to act out the beauty they feel within or to show the ferociousness they can feel, all while cloaked in the hidden veils of cloth and makeup. For adults, it means a chance to socialize and show off their intense creativity. For everyone, it means the one night where anything goes and the scarier they look, the better they’ll be accepted.

Halloween once meant dressing up in sheets and Mom’s makeup with a pumpkin set out on the front steps, watching frightening movies until the crack of dawn and bellowing “Trick or Treat!” at suspecting houses waiting with loads of candy. Today’s Halloween means, “Bigger, Flashier, Fancier!” Kids still love to go from house to house, but their costume must be the best. Home dwellers still enjoy handing out the treats but they must provide the best assortment. Decorations must shine, shimmer and terrify.

Of course, companies have taken full advantage of the competitive nature in the human condition. Come mid-November, you can find the stores inundated with Halloween products varying in size, shape, color, action and intent. They gleam and flicker, they scream and cackle, they laugh and boo, they dance and they pop up. The markets offer props, decorations, costumes, foods and items most of us would have never thought of.

Halloween is all about glamour and fear. The more glamorous a horror theme the better the turnout will end up being. You want to consider, first above all else, whether your theme is to be aimed towards adults, children or both. This will help you make a more informed decision on the intensity of the theme. The second decision should be whether or not you want a more gothic, morbid, cartoon or fashion theme.

With these aspects in mind, you can start on the house decorations. Quantities of items are available, based on any budget, to create an attractive and memorable adornment for your home. Outer decor can consist of pumpkins, props and elite effects for atmosphere and lighting. This applies to the inside of the house, as well.

It’s important to remember, though, that a house isn’t the only place a party can thrill its attendees. Try renting a warehouse (borrowing one from a friend would be better), using a garage (a large one, of course) or setting up a series of tents that connect into one large tent.

Invitations are as important as the event itself. You want people to want to be there. You want them to be anxiously waiting for the day to arrive. Use some originality when creating your invitations. Refer to the creatures of Halloween such as goblins, ghouls, the Grim Reaper and witches. Use tactful puns that are enjoyable and unique. Let your imagination bring in your guests.

On the night of your party, set up contests for best costume, most original costume, earliest arrival, latest arrival (keep that one a secret so as not to cause your guests to come much too late), and anything else you can think of. Come up with trophies or gifts as the prizes. Provide activities such as pumpkin carving, karaoke, apple bobbing (tradition lives) and other things you think your guests might enjoy. This will ensure you and your guests a very Happy Halloween!
